Match Report

Match report Eltham CC Vs Bexley Jets CC

For those that don't know, this game is played annually for friends and colleagues to raise a glass to Jim Hill, the ex-Captain of both Eltham and the JETS, who was seriously injured in a horse riding accident several years ago.

There was an excellent turn-out for the game, and Skipper Bulpitt (playing for the JETS) told stand-in Eltham skipper Wouldham that Eltham could have a bat. Having stolen two of Eltham's best batsmen, this wasn't as generous as it first appeared. A sleepy-sounding David Jones was called up by Derek before play started and he had completely forgotten about the game - not surprising since he had just returned that day from a 4 week trip and had serious jetlag. He still came along, however, and took part in a good game. Thanks, David, that's what this game is all about - we hope you enjoyed the evening.

John Fisher and Pete "Chef for the Day" Swain started the innings off in swashbuckling style. John looped a ball to square leg, where Greg Wright delighted his JETS teammates with a catch that caused major celebrations - Jim would doubtless have had a grin too! Pete continued with some big sixes but was out soon after for a quick 41. There wasn't a lot else to report on the Eltham innings (although clearly somebody had told Derek to bat out for the draw!) as batsmen came and went with alarming regularity. Andy Redman and Mick Cohen will be debating the manner of Andy's dismissla for some time to come too we feel!

The JETS innings was similar to Eltham's - difficult to get the ball off the square! 73 all out, and Eltham had managed to grab an unlikely win. In truth, of course, this match isn't really about the cricket match, but it's always nice to play a proper game.

Pete Swain then managed a barbecue, catering for about 40 people, no mean feat at all, and he did a marvellous job. Thanks to Pete, Linda, Matt and Nicola for getting in all the supplies for the barbecue. Your correspondent partook of several cans of libation and Gail had to drive me home!

All in all, a lovely evening. Here's to Jim.
