Match Report

Match report Eltham CC Vs Bexley Jets CC

The annual game to remember Jim Hill, our ex-Captain and also captain of the Bexley JETS. As members will know, Jim sadly died in 2009 following a long fight against injury sustained when falling off a horse several years ago. Jim was an extremely popular Eltham and JETS player.

The game is scheduled to start from 4.30pm onwards, and a barbecue (courtesy of Skipperoo Swain of course) will be provided for ??5 per head.

Please do your best to come along even if you cannot get to the ground to play - and let Swainy know that you are coming so that he can get enough grub in.

Jets v Eltham, a fixture that lights up every seasons fixture list. The annual 20/20 Friday night BBQ was set and the cars drifted slowly to FRC for a 4:30 start. Bulpitt was seen trying to keep a track of how many Jets there actually were, 9 at last count! Whilst Pete coolly setting the BBQ up and preparing to unleash Khurram on an unsuspecting Jets.

Eltham won the toss and put Jets into bat. Pete Fisher and Matt Bevan opened for the Jets and the Welshman was soon in 20/20 mode as he skied the first ball to midwicket only to be dropped. So in true style he tried again second ball - this time it was taken! Up strode Alan Horne, trying hard not to pull a muscle, have cramp or injure any other part of his anatomy as he walked to the middle. Fisher and Horne played the dangerous John Fisher and JK until Pete edged one behind and Jets find themselves 20ish-2. In comes Bulpitt to join Horne and together they take on Khurram and Tan, a drink that is enjoyed in Essex I believe. Jets were now around 70/80 for 3 and Mick Cohen comes to the crease to enjoy some flashing blade strokes before edging to slip and Henry taking a smart catch. Seeds was bowled and Jets finished 108 in their 20 overs.

A quick turn around and Swain and Hicks padded up ready to have a quick BBQ. But alas, Bulpitt employed a strategy last seen by Roy-boy and the shin guards. He opened with Fisher Junior and Seeds with a heavy leg side field! Shocking fielding saw a 4 off the first ball, but then pressure ensured a run out for Swain! Jets saw an opening. Bevan made sure that the sledging was kept a maximum and the slow bowling tactics of Jets saw the Eltham wickets falling.

Until the Khurram. Bish-Bash-Bosh and the game was taken away from the Jets. Even the dismissal of JK with a devilishly fast in swinging seamer, well that's how it looked to me? And the return of flight and guile of Cohen's bowling, well that's how it looked from his end? Didn't stop Andy Redman hitting the winning runs again. Rumour had it that he played a cover drive for four off of Cohen???

SO Eltham win again! And we all set off to eat the mountain of BBQ before Matt Bevan came out of the changing rooms.

An excellent evening followed; burgers, sausages, chicken, salmon and asparagus were all on offer with the Asahi. Mick gave a short reminder as to why we all met together, and the evening came to a close.

Thank you Pete and Linda for the BBQ, Mick for his words, and everyone for ensuring that we still remember our friend Jim.
