Match Report

Match report Eltham CC Vs Town Malling CC

I don't know what Yasser had for breakfast on the match day or how he went about his pre-match drills as I was stuck in traffic and made it to the ground seconds before the match began. What unfolded next though was absolute mayhem, courtesy that man Yasser himself.

This was a home game, played on the far-side pitch, a typically slow one with low bounce thanks to all the rain leading up to the game. Captain Pete won the boss(that right??) and elected to bowl first. New ball duties were given to the pair of Yasser&Pad. Yasser was both at his fearsome and immaculate best in his opening spell. Sticking to the basics, he bowled full, fast, furious and straight, relying more on the seam movement to do all the damage. The result was something special and there for everyone at the ground to witness. His opening and only spell read 7-7-0-5, the best ever bowling figures for Eltham (beating the previous best of 5 for 1 by Colin). Just to give a measure of his accuracy, 4 of his 5 wickets were clean bowled, and the fifth a return catch (although that was a rank long hop, but when you are hot, you are hot). He could have easily gone on to better that, had it not been for the skipper's honest intentions to give everyone a game before it ended. As you can guess, this spell completely deflated the opposition's spirit, and ensured we didn't have enough to chase for a comprehensive win and keep a clean sheet for the season.

Pad played a good supporting cast, keeping it tight at the other end, but didn't bowl straight enough for this pitch to be among the wickets. He was taken off after being hit for couple of boundaries in the final over of his spell. He was replaced by Will, who like Yasser, kept it simple, bowled full and straight and got a very good return of 3 wickets. Al and Adam bowled a few overs of spin, and got a wicket each for their efforts. The end result, Eltham had a meagre 34 runs to chase

A steady opening partnership by the Father&Son pair of John and Pete ensured no hiccups during the chase. John was a touch unlucky when he completely missed sight of the ball due to the poor sight screens and was caught plumb in front. By then, the match was nearly won. Pete played some good looking shots, so did John with his swivel pull. Asjad went in the end to keep company to Pete.

All in all, a smashing 9 wicket win for Eltham on a day that will be long remembered for one of the finest spells of fast bowling ever witnessed (at least at Eltham)
