Match Report

Match report Eltham CC Vs Trinity Oxley CC

Eltham's first defeat of the season and a fairly heavy one at that. A poor batting performance saw only Pete Swain really getting going. The Trinity bowling has to be commended - on a slow, low pitch which called for tight bowling, there were very, very few loose deliveries on offer. That said, as usual, Eltham did sometimes conspire to assist the bowlers by gifting them their wickets! A paltry 85 seemed a good 40 to fifty short of making Trinity break into a sweat.

The pitch remained difficult to score on when Eltham bowled but it was always going to take something special to defend 85. Excellent bowling from Tanveer at the start could still not quite create the usual pressure that his economy at the start often does - Tan's figures rarely get their just reward in terms of wickets, but a lot of the later bowlers often thank him for forcing the batsmen to have to chase the game. Ricky also bowled tightly and picked up a couple of wickets.

Shaukat and Toby managed to pick up some wickets but with about 20 to win the heavens opened. Usually there is no way we would have played on but Eltham, feeling somewhat abashed at their low score, felt it would be churlish to stop and deny Trinity their win, so continued in frankly appalling conditions (at one point Colin exhanged his whites for waders). With the ball resembling something slipperier than a Vote Leave politician (bit of politics for you there, don't mind if we do...) the Trinity batsmen were able to knock off the remaining runs and we could all retreat to the dry clubhouse for hot broth and a towel.
